In some instances, the book offers a record of buildings under threat of- or actually scheduled for-demolition at the time of the book's publication. Others have been designated as historic landmarks and have been marked for preservation or have been restored to some former state. Many of these are open to the public. Still others-churches, homes, schools, public buildings, commercial structures - continue to be in active use, sometimes for purposes originally intended, sometimes after adaptation for other purposes scarcely related to the builders' intentions. A few were built as early as the late eighteenth century, when white settlers had only just come to Middle Tennessee; a few date from the early years of the twentieth century; the rest show the changing architectural styles of the nineteenth century and reveal how the prevailing tastes of the time were adapted by Tennessee builders to the needs, climate, terrain, and available building materials of the region.
